Iznájar is located near the southern border of the province of Córdoba and acts as a natural gateway to the Sierra Subeticas Natural Park. The typical white village of Iznájar is nestled among olive groves by the reservoir. The views of the surroundings are breathtaking: gently rolling hills, the vast blue lake and the dark green olive trees. Iznájar is located in the south of the vast La Subbética Natural Park. The village is built against a cliff face and has just under 4,500 inhabitants. There are even more typical white villages in the area, all of which are definitely worth discovering.
In and near Iznájar, there are a number of restaurants and bars with a wide range of Spanish snacks or a full meal. Iznájar is centrally located between the three provinces of Málaga, Granada and Córdoba, making it an ideal base for exploring these culturally rich cities. The cities of Málaga, Granada and Córdoba are all within an hour's drive.
Sports enthusiasts can fully enjoy the unspoilt countryside: hiking, donkey rides, mountain biking, golf, swimming and fishing. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy water sports to their heart's content on the huge reservoir: kayaking, sailing and boat trips. In winter, it is possible to ski in the Sierra Nevada, just over an hour's drive from Iznájar.
Near the village of Iznájar is a small sandy beach on the shores of Lake Iznájar, where you can swim and rent pedal boats and canoes. There is also a campsite and a water sports centre.
The ruins of the 1,200-year-old Iznájar Castle are the main attraction for visitors, although they are in poor condition. The Church of Santiago is also definitely worth a visit. The church was built in the 15th and 16th centuries, with a notable late addition in the form of a Baroque altarpiece. The cemetery next to the church dates back to 1806.
The most interesting neighborhood, or district, in Iznájar is the Barrio del Coso, a maze of narrow streets with typical whitewashed Andalusian houses. As is often the case in these mountain towns, the “lower” part is also the newer part of the village, and the central square, Plaza Nueva, offers excellent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery from the viewpoints of La Cruz de San Pedro and Paseo de la Constitución. Iznájar also has a small but fascinating municipal museum, dedicated to the country’s agricultural heritage and local customs.
The local cuisine reflects Iznájar’s location in an excellent region for pork production. During Carnival in February, the traditional pork sausage is stuffed with eggs, bread, ham and turkey fillet. Other specialties include the rich salmorejo with orange and cod, and La Porra, an affordable and nutritious stew with tomatoes, bread, peppers and ham.
