Where is Fuerteventura located?
Fuerteventura is part of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago. That last part might be a bit misleading, though, as it isn't actually located near Spain itself. It lies much further south, off the coast of Africa—specifically, off the coast of southern Morocco. This puts the island about 3,800 km away from the Netherlands.
Consequently, the flight time is longer than flying to the Spanish mainland; the journey takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending partly on whether you have a stopover on one of the other Canary Islands. It may be a longer flight, but the upside is the pleasant weather all year round. Fuerteventura is therefore a popular getaway destination for an autumn or winter sun holiday.
What is Fuerteventura known for?
In terms of surface area, Fuerteventura is the second-largest of the Canary Islands; only Tenerife is bigger. There is over 1,600 km² to explore, with something to suit every type of holidaymaker.
But if we had to name just one thing Fuerteventura is famous for, it would be the wind. It is present almost constantly, making the island exceptionally popular among windsurfers and kitesurfers. Corralejo is the most popular seaside resort on Fuerteventura. It is also home to one of the island's most famous attractions: Parque Natural de Corralejo, or the Corralejo Dunes. Bordering an 11-kilometer-long beach lie beautiful sand dunes that constantly shift shape—sculpted by the wind and even by sand blowing in from the Sahara. Here, you truly feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
Fuerteventura doesn't really have any large cities, but if one place were to qualify, it would be Betancuria. The island's former capital boasts a few beautiful historic buildings in its center, complete with charming little balconies. You’ll also find a fantastic viewpoint just outside the town.
Parque Natural de Jandía is home to the island's highest peak, Pico de la Zarza. If you’re up for the challenge, you can hike to the 800-meter summit in about five hours and be rewarded with a spectacular view. For the ultimate beach holiday, we recommend visiting Fuerteventura between mid-June and the end of September. Why is this the best time? Because it’s the warmest and driest period, yet you still get that pleasant breeze to keep you cool.
If you don’t necessarily want to spend the whole day sunbathing but also enjoy exploring the local area, then slightly cooler temperatures might be preferable. In that case, we recommend visiting between March and mid-June, or in October. Even in November, daytime highs still reach around 23°C.
In January and February, maximum temperatures on Fuerteventura hover around 20°C. Too cool for a swim? Not at all—just make sure to book a hotel with a heated pool during these months.
